Peng Wei

Born in Chengdu, currently residing in Beijing and Wuzhen.
Master of Philosophy, Nankai University.

Peng Wei is a representative figure in Chinese contemporary art，working with ink-wash. Her practice spans painting, installation, video, photography and other mediums. Drawing on solid mastery of traditional ink-wash techniques, a distinctive vision and multidisciplinary thinking, she connects ancient artistic resources with the present. She seeks dialogue between practices rooted in Chinese tradition and history and international contemporary art practices, thereby expanding and subverting classical Chinese ink-wash painting. Through personal narratives that transcend time, geography and conventions, she constructs an unconventional reality and addresses issues including cultural identity, intellectual belonging, gender and sexuality.

Peng Wei has held solo exhibitions at institutions including the National Taiwan Museum of History (Taipei), Suzhou Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art (USA), and Guangdong Museum of Art. She has also participated in a series of major contemporary art exhibitions at home and abroad, such as the Beijing Biennale, Memory and the Contemporary – Collateral Event of the 57th Venice Biennale, Stepping Out! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art, and M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization.

Her works have been collected by institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; the Princeton University Art Museum; the Brooklyn Museum (New York); M+ Museum (Hong Kong); the National Art Museum of China; the Hong Kong Museum of Art; Suzhou Museum; Guangdong Museum of Art; He Xiangning Art Museum; Beijing Fine Art Academy Museum; the Sigg Collection (Switzerland); and the DSL Collection (France), among others.
