Biography
Xu Hualing (b. 1975, Harbin, China) is currently the Deputy Dean, Professor, and Ph.D. Supervisor at the School of Chinese Painting, Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). She received her Bachelor’s degree from the Chinese Painting Department of CAFA in 2000, followed by her Master’s degree in 2003, and earned her Ph.D. from CAFA in 2020.
As a member of the Chinese artist collective N12 Group, Xu Hualing’s distinctive artistic practice has already touched upon many of the boundaries and even perils of contemporary painting, making it difficult to hastily assign a conceptual category to her work. In conventional descriptions, she is regarded as a representative artist with an experimental spirit in the field of Chinese fine-brush (Gongbi) painting. Her work continuously balances and constructs a highly personal yet coherent and consistent visual narrative within the subtle interplay of medium and concept. She has held solo exhibitions in numerous cities worldwide, including Beijing, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Taipei, and Nanjing.
